All About Avoidance Behaviours and Why They Frequently make Problems Worse NOT Better!

What Is Avoidance?
Avoidance strategies are behaviours that are designed to reduce exposure to situations that are perceived to be threatening in some way.
They are a form of safety behaviour and as such, have a tendency to make matters worse rather than better!
One of the significant down-sides of avoidance strategies is that they prevent a person from gaining evidence that might contradict what they believe to be true about a feared situation.
For example, people who avoid making mistakes by only doing things that they know they cannot possibly get wrong will never discover that it’s OK and ‘human’ to make mistakes.
In fact, people who do everything they can to avoid mistakes end up disadvantaged in comparison to others because making mistakes is an incredibly useful method for ‘learning’ new things.
If we don’t learn then we don’t really grow and evolve.

Arrange your FREE initial consultation here.
If you’d like to find out more about avoidance or recovering from any of your mental health problems then why not arrange a free initial consultation with us.
During this consultation we will discuss your particular issues and the different types of mental health counselling we offer (including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – CBT) without you having to commit to any counselling going forward.
The consultation lasts around 50 minutes and is a great opportunity to meet with either Paul or Joan and decide if you would like to proceed with any support.
