What is Overthinking?

Overthinking is also known as ‘brooding’, ‘ruminating’ or sometimes ‘obsessing’ and is often an attempt to ‘be in control’ of events or circumstances through the use of deeply analytical thinking (Also see OCD).

It can also be considered as a ‘safety behaviour’ because the main purpose of overthinking is to understand ALL of the possible variables in intricate detail so that you will be able to anticipate all of the possible negative outcomes and ‘be safer’.

Overthinking as a Benefit…

Overthinking is not always a disadvantage and does not always create problems.

If, for example, you wish to be a highly successful accountant, then you are going to need a highly analytical thinking style, one in which you check, re-check and check again to ensure that you have detailed every single transaction.

In this case, overthinking provides you with an advantage that somebody who worries less about the detail would not benefit from.

Overthinking as a Problem

If, on the other hand, you have an overthinking style and spend most of your time thinking, in great detail, about every single thing that could possibly go wrong with your life, then your overthinking will almost certainly turn out to be a major disadvantage for you!

It is important to realise that overthinking is created by your core underlying belief that you NEED to exercise control in order to be ‘happy’ and this is almost always the actual reason WHY you are NOT as happy as you would like to be!

Focusing all of your time and effort on trying to be in control is symptomatic of people who are actually out of control!

Therapy & Counselling for Overthinking

We offer a number of different types of therapy and counselling for Overthinking and anxiety-related problems.

Choosing the most suitable therapy depends on a number of different considerations including factors such as:

  • How long you have had the problem.
  • Your personal preferences.
  • How your problem is affecting you today.

You can read more about the different types of therapy for overthinking on the following links:

Although all therapies use slightly different approaches, the one thing they all have in common is the relationship that is formed between the client and therapist.

Research suggests that this therapy relationship may be the most important factor in achieving a good therapy outcome.

The behaviour change framework

Behaviour Change Framework – BCF

All of our counselling sessions and programmes for overthinking problems are enhanced by applying the Behaviour Change Framework (BCF).

This scientifically proven protocol clearly defines the incremental stages of behaviour change that you need to go through in order to achieve long lasting and sustainable change.

Drawn from the Transtheoretical Model of Behaviour Change (TTM), the framework provides a roadmap that not only gauges the current stage of progression through the change process, but also indicates if more change is required before entering the next phase of therapy or coaching.

In this way, we are able to ensure that you get the best possible level of support in overcoming your problems as well as ensuring that we don’t terminate the change process prematurely.

You can read more about the Science of Change here.
