Understanding Phobias and Treatments
Effective Approaches to Phobia Management
Explore how Lee Psychology utilises Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Hypnotherapy to address various phobias, fostering significant improvements in mental health.
What Are Phobias?
Phobias are intense, irrational fears of specific objects, situations, or activities.
They can cause significant distress and interfere with daily life.
Common symptoms across all phobias include excessive fear or anxiety when encountering the object or situation, avoidance of the feared stimulus, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, trembling, and a strong desire to escape.
Phobias can be caused by various factors, including traumatic experiences, learned behaviours, genetics, and irrational thoughts.
Phobias We Work With
Emetophobia
Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting or being sick.
Symptoms often include:
- Avoiding people who have been ill in the last few days.
- Abstinence from drinking alcohol.
- Insisting on very high levels of hygiene.
- Constantly monitoring bodily feelings.
- Maintaining very high standards of personal hygiene.
Paul has expert knowledge of this phobia and has helped numerous clients to overcome it over the last 15 years.
Thanatophobia
Thanatophobia is the fear of dying.
The symptoms of Thanatophobia are very similar to other specific phobias and will often include:
- Constantly worrying about dying.
- Being hyper-vigilant about your health.
- Avoiding taking any risks.
- An elevated heart rate.
- A sense of dread about what might happen.
Whist the fear of dying is common amongst all sentient beings, Thanatophobia is a more exaggerated version.
More Phobias
It’s virtually impossible to compile a list of all of the phobias that exist because people can develop a phobia about anything.
Just as long as a person consider a situation or object to be a threat of any sort, they can develop a phobia about it.
Here at Lee Psychology we have helped people with over 100 different phobias, including all of those listed below.
Androphobia – Fear of Men
Agoraphobia – Open Spaces
Aviophobia – Flying
Acrophobia – Heights
Ailurophobia – Cats
Atelophobia – Mistakes
Genophobia – Fear of Sex
Nosocomephobia – Hospitals
Philophobia – Love
