What is Alektorophobia?

Alektorophobia is the Fear of Chickens and, like all other fears and phobias, can be a cause of significant anxiety and stress if you suffer from it.

Some possible situations that can trigger your fear of Chickens are: being near to chickens, seeing chickens in the media or on TV, walking in the countryside and encountering chickens and so on.

There is no scientific evidence that Alektorophobia is the result of any kind of biological fault or chemical imbalance in spite of the traction that biomedical models of mental illness are given in the media.

On the contrary, Alektorophobia is much more likely to be the result of your own, subjective evaluation (meaning-making) of what happened to you and is therefore a psychosocial phenomenon.

Common symptoms of Alektorophobia

Alektorophobia Symptoms & Behaviours

All phobias, including Alektorophobia, create feelings of anxiety because phobic objects or situations are always perceived as a threat.

Consequently, the symptoms of Alektorophobia are both specific and generic and may include:

  • Fear or anxiety about being in the presence of chickens.
  • Panic attacks or anxiety attacks in situations where chickens are present or anticipated to be present.
  • Avoidance of situations that may involve chickens, such as being in the countryside.
  • Physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, and shortness of breath when faced with chickens.
  • Feeling of helplessness or being out of control in the presence of chickens.
  • Intrusive thoughts or nightmares related to chickens.
  • Depression, irritability, or other mood changes related to chickens.

You may have all, some or even different symptoms to these listed here and this is due to the subjective nature of Alektorophobia.

However, it is important to be aware that your symptoms WILL subside over time and rarely last for more that 20 to 30 minutes.

What Causes Alektorophobia?

It’s also possible that your Alektorophobia may be the result of traumatic events or adverse situations that you experienced in your earlier developmental years.

You may, for example, have visited a farm or zoo and had to walk through a brood of chickens.

However, because a Fear of Chickens is by no means universal, the most likely explanation for your Alektorophobia is your subjective evaluation of earlier experiences around which you have constructed a set of beliefs.

Is Your Phobia Making You Anxious Or Are You Creating Your Own Problem?

It might be hard to accept, but it’s almost certain that the anxiety you experience when you encounter your phobic object or situation is being created by YOU unwittingly and NOT the thing you fear.
