Lapse & Relapse During Change
A Lapse is how we describe the experience of performing an old behaviour (one that we wanted to change) on a single occasion, for example having a cigarette after 3 weeks of not smoking.
On the other hand, a Relapse is what happens when we fall back into a complete pattern of performing an old behaviour and effectively ‘give-in’ to temptation.
Lapsing or Relapsing occurs when we fail to maintain the new behaviour sufficiently well and our decisional balance sways towards favouring benefits associated with the old behaviour.
