What is Therapy?

Therapy is the generic term used to describe psychological therapy, psychotherapy and talking therapies that are used to help people to ovecome mental health problems and emotional distress.

One of the principle problems with using the term therapy is that it carries with it the implicit suggestion that there is something wrong that needs to be fixed.

Therefore, wherever we use the phrase therapy to describe the different types of support we offer, please bear in mind that our position does NOT include the perspective that you have a fault that needs fixing, only that you need support to understand and change the way you currently feel.

The Different Types of Therapy We Offer

All of the different therapy solutions that we offer are based on clinically proven scientific evidence established over many years.

They are rendered even more effective by the adoption of the psychosocial perspective that people are affected by the social, cultural and economic contexts in which they live their lives and that this should not be discounted when trying to make sense of the current feelings of distress.

Psychosocial Therapy

Psychosocial therapy is a form of support that takes into consideration all the aspects of a person’s life when trying to make sense of feelings of distress at the current time.

This includes aspects such as the social, economic and cultural contexts as well as what has happened to a person during their life and what they did to learn how to cope with adversities.

The CORE CBT Programme

Building upon clinically proven CBT principles, the CORE CBT Programme is a scientific approach to changing the way you experience your life through an understanding of how human beings develop meanings and interpretations from different experiences and then create a library of meanings that can be used to make sense of similar experiences in the future.

It addresses CORE beliefs and CORE values and explains how we use these to interpret our own, subjective reality – sometimes in unhelpful ways!

The course also demonstrates how to change unhelpful thinking processes through Cognitive Reconstruction (CO-RE) in order to eliminate distressing emotions.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – CBT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, is the most clinically researched form of psychotherapy and is used widely throughout the mental health professions.

The principle philosophy of CBT is that the way we think about things (our thoughts) determines the way that we feel about things (emotional outcomes), so if we want to change how we feel then we need to change the way that we think.

CBT is most effective when it is delivered with an appreciation of how core beliefs and values set the rationale for how people then ‘think’ or interpret experiences rather than simply focusing on thoughts alone.
